DDO: A hazard to myself

Bio Break

With my time in Secret World Legends on hiatus until/unless new content arrives and a waning interest in pushing through the remainder of LOTRO’s Mordor, my MMO time is pretty much World of Warcraft and Dungeons and Dragons Online these days. That feels oddly limited for me, but I know more is on the way this spring, so I’m not concerned.

In the meanwhile, I’ll enjoy my near-daily forays into a different DDO dungeon. Am I the only one who is relieved when I see that the dungeon length of any particular instance is “medium” rather than “long” or “very long”? I get really nervous about the longer ones, because if I up and die in them, I’d hate to lose an hour or two and have to redo them all.

No absolutely terrific stories from this past week to share, I’m afraid. I’m slowly making my way through House…

Stars Without Number

Cannibal Halfling Gaming

Are you an old-school gamer, or a new-school gamer? I’m the Level One Wonk, and I consider myself both, which may be why I enjoy this week’s game so much. Today we’re going to talk about Stars Without Number, a game designed by Kevin Crawford. Crawford has released many games through his Sine Nomine Publishing imprint, which are all built around similar design principles: hackable sandbox experiences with an old-school heart. Games like Godbound, Scarlet Heroes and Stars Without Number are all designed to bolt right in to both old-school D&D and its retroclones, but these games are no mere clones. While Stars Without Number has characters with six familiar stats, saving throws, classes, and levels, it stretches the D&D framework quite far. As you may be able to guess from the name, Stars Without Number is a science fiction game.

6 Most Disappointing Video Game Sequels To Great Games

THE GAME FREAK SHOW

Sequels? HERE COMES THE MONEY!

Right now I think that sequels are not made anymore to advance the storyline or continue the previous quests. I think sequels are made so that companies like EA can make money out of people’s nostalgia and series reputation. Hell, some are not even connected in any way they just use the name of the game to make it more exciting so that stupid people like us can buy them again.

Here are 6 most disappointing video game sequels

MEDAL OF HONOR: WARFIGHTER

Image result for MEDAL OF HONOR: WARFIGHTER

It wants to be respectful of military veterans and present a realistic, gritty experience with a heart string-tugging story that’s layered with a thrilling secret operations plot – but it’s so fundamentally jumbled, thrown together, and confusing that I can’t begin to recommend it. – Meristation
This isn’t just an upsetting sequel or me-too military shooter – Warfighter is disrespectful of your…

Do MMO Control Schemes Discourage Player Interaction?

Occasional Hero

It is widely agreed that MMO players are less social than they used to be. This is a very complicated issue, and people have suggested a lot of reasons. A common scapegoat is the advent of dungeon/raid finders, which disincentivize players from forming long term relationships in guilds and such. Some blame the casualization of the genre, with players pushing for systems that allow for fast and furious consumption of content, with no reason to slow down and talk to the other players around them. Most importantly, in my opinion, is that Internet culture has simply changed. It’s no longer novel to be talking to someone in another city, another state, or even another country while playing a video game like it was when I started playing MMOs in 2005. Of course, there are always those ever-present rose tinted glasses that players tend to wear when looking back on their…

Biggest Hyped Video Games That Failed Miserably After The Launch

THE GAME FREAK SHOW

I HAVE SEEN THINGS YOU WON’T BELIEVE!

Hype! Hype can kill or make a game. I have seen great gaming franchises failed overnight only because of hype hmm…. alright, that was too philosophical. But seriously though Hype is bad for games and mostly created to sell more copies and just create more buzz around it. But some were hyped to an extent that made them destined to fail!

These are some of the biggest video games that failed miserably after the launch.

EVOLVE

Evolve has rare highs hidden amongst tedious lows. When the title hits its stride, it is easy to see why it was designed in this way – Worth Playing
Evolve should have been great. It isn’t. Worse still is that its core idea feels as if it has been undermined by over-complication and, more disappointingly, the worst practices of modern publishing. – VideoGamer
No actual campaign and focus on…

Jarvanna’s story ->Jan 28, 2018

Micki's Delirium

It’s finally time to tell the story of Jarvanna. When I did the character stories last time, Jarvanna didn’t get one, as there wasn’t that much to tell. Instead I posted this blog about her. Now, almost 5 years later, Jarvanna’s story isn’t really that long, and yet, it’s been 5 years.

In July 2012, my sister decided to start playing DDO. Since I didn’t have a char at the right level, and since the druid class had been released only a short while earlier, I decided to make a druid. The very first post I found mentioning Jarvanna, was this one: While everyone’s off in King’s Forest…

Here are the blogs from Jarvanna’s early days:
July 7, 2012 Instead of Cannith night…
July 11, 2012 Thinking about my toons and about the game
July 14, 2012 Bugs or goofs?
July 19, 2012 Cannith night finally
August 5, 2012 Sort…

Why It’s Hard to Get Good at Fighting Games

3rd World Geeks

Dragon Ball FighterZ just came out and I’ve been having a blast with the game. Although I’ve only had the game for a couple of days now, there’s a lot to Dragon Ball FighterZ that makes it a very exceptional fighting game. The game looks like the anime come to life and the controls feel very responsive. The action is also super hectic and over the top, much like all of the fighting in the anime as well. There’s also a lot of fan service, such as character interactions and special cinematic finishes that look like they were plucked directly from the show, which is amazing to say the least and always brings a smile to my face when I see them.

However, this is a game that I know I will never get really good at or get at a high enough level that I could actually go online…

Dishonored

Dishonored made me feel like a person struggling to retain the things that were important to me in a world gone mad. It goes beyond “role-playing” to challenge players to draw their own personal moral line in the sand, but does so without being preachy or judgmental. – Cheat Code Central
It’s a rare game that feels so compulsively replayable, but Dishonored is such a game…

Raids week 60

Micki's Delirium

On Saturday I was a bit late to log on, and I saw someone having a post up for baba’s, except their post said “at 4 pm”. As it was about 3.20 pm, I decided to put my post up as normally. Soon after I got a tell asking if I could wait for their raid. I hesitated, contemplated, and then decided that I would keep my post up, as baba’s tend to fill quickly. So it did this time as well. My group filled and was ready to get going by 3.30 pm. I asked the party to split themselves, and someone attempted to create teams, which I believe failed a bit as not everyone noticed they tried to do that. I didn’t anyway, and just went right like I usually do. The run was good, we struggled on one of the scarecrow spawns, but other than that we…
