D&D Diary – Lost Mine of Phandelver – Session 6

Thundertree Clean It’s always good to have a clean map for your players. So you’re welcome.

The party explores the ruined town of Thundertree, meets the creator of the Forgotten Realms, and gets in way over their head. Stupid Dragons!

Before we get started, I just want to mention this incredible thing that Jim, the other Dad player, built for our game. He made an insert for his dining room table that can hold a good-sized monitor. A cable from the monitor hooks up to my phone. From the phone I can upload movable battle mats and other images to show the players. This is going to be great for wilderness and town adventures, where the line of sight is pretty far. I’ve found that for the claustrophobic dungeons or other exploration maps, it’s better to use pen and paper, but this thing is still awesome! Okay, on to the adventure.

Farming Memoirs

Micki's Delirium

I recently heard of the +2 reaper helm that gives a +2 bonus to all ability stats. With the +10 loot bonus last weekend I bought some treasure bonus pots and headed into memoirs to do some loot farming (I wanted a circlet with the +2 bonus). I started out running Thazara on R1 and after ransacking her, I switched to Cerge and ran R2. The first 2-3 runs I logged the pikers (alts) off inside the quest, but then I just parked them outside and entered to loot.

After the first two runs I started bringing a hireling to heal me during the boss fights. It was a lot less stressful when I could stand there attacking the boss with the hireling throwing heals at me, rather than me having to constantly keep myself healed. Thazara’s aura was not enough when the boss would hit me for ~200 per…

D&D Diary – Lost Mine of Phandelver – Session 5

Game Night Blog

The Lost Mine of Phandelver Adventure Overview.

First, I have a confession to make. We are not currently in Week 5 of the Phandelver Campaign. We are actually in Week 18 and if you happen to follow my Instagram account, then you also know that we just had our epic finale battle against the main villain, Nezzar, aka The Black Spider.

I have been trying to play catch up ever since I started writing about our adventures. Fortunately for the blog, but unfortunately for the players we play D&D only every other week which has allowed me to close the gap a little.

Week 5 (and it was really week 6) was a weird week. We barely played any D&D this week. Instead, my players and I talked about where the campaign as a whole was heading. I thought this was great. This meant that all the players were engaged…

General Purpose Workshop & Store

Dyson's Dodecahedron

workshop-storefront

Here we have a floorplan for a typical fantasy city storefront – a store to do your shopping in front, a workshop behind it to produce the goods being sold (with a small strong room for storing finished goods and expensive components when the shop is closed) and residential space for the shop owner(s) upstairs. There’s also a basement (accessed through a trap door in the workshop) where generic stock, overstock, and extra materials are stored.

Workshop and Store Workshop and Store

While this is the standard assumption for most fantasy storefronts – the majority of actual medieval and Roman era storefronts didn’t include the front room where shopping could be done. They would open their shuttered windows when they open and customers would shop through those windows, never entering the building proper. Workshops where this wouldn’t work well (blacksmiths for instance) would have the customers walk into the workshop directly to deal…

D&D Diary – Lost Mine of Phandelver – Session 4

Game Night Blog

How do you turn a lowly bandit hideout into an epic D&D adventure? By forgetting key details during the game.

Starter PhandelverThe continuing saga of the Lost Mine of Phlapdoodle… Fahrvergnugen… Phalanges… Whatever.

Dungeons and Dragons (like most RPGs) is the most extensive, exasperating, and enthralling game that you will ever play. No other game can go from sheer aggravation to riotous exhilaration as quickly as D&D. With dozens of rule books, a semi-clueless DM who has to improvise all the time, and a gang of unpredictable PCs who never do what you expect, it should come as no surprise that you may have to play several sessions before everything just works.

Well today, after three sessions, one good, one meh, and one horrible, everything just clicked, and we were playing epic D&D. And all they did was clear out a lowly bandit hideout. I apologize in advance for what will…

Comfort Food Games

Gaming Omnivore

You know those days where you just want to relax and feel comfy? You don’t have to worry about work or any other responsibility of “being an adult” so you feel like kicking back in your pajama pants and Doctor Who slippers in front of the tv while eating some of your favorite comfort foods. For many people comfort foods are something usually like mashed potatoes or mac and cheese, or if you’re anything like me, pizza is your go-to comfort food. Also, if you’re anything like me, you may want to accompany your favorite comfort food with some video games; the games that you’ve maybe played a hundred times but still find yourself coming back to as you settle into bed or your living room. Having had a few of these type of days recently I came up with the idea of writing a post of my own personal…
