Dungeons and Dragons: Artificer Impressions

Superior Realities

I’m starting to worry I might be flirting with D&D burnout, but for now, it’s still taking up a lot of my time. I stopped going to the AL games where I was playing my war cleric, but I have instead joined a new campaign run by one of my friends on weekends. It’s an episodic campaign with a somewhat fluctuating party composition.

The official logo for Dungeons and Dragons, fifth editionI had a hell of a time figuring out a class to play for this one. My first thought was to import my cleric or my druid, but there are already several paladins and druids in the party, so that seemed redundant. I considered a Sea Elf sorcerer/warlock, but then one of the other guys decided to be a sorcerer.

Then, serendipitously, Wizards went ahead and published the new Unearthed Arcana artificer class. I took one look at the class and instantly fell in love.

The Independents: Sundown

Cannibal Halfling Gaming

Life on the road in Sundown is tough; you have to savor rest when you can get it. I’ve been a guest at the Ruelas homestead for the past week. They’ve treated me to hot meals, a bed, and have promised me a bag of coin if I can help them deal with their bird problem. They’re good folk, fond of the Fiendswatch even on a safe day. But today ain’t safe.

Welcome to Sundown, a game for monster hunters, transhumanist revolutionaries, and everyone in between. Get ready to leave our world behind and explore the beautiful and brutal land where still water flows deep and death waits behind every bend.

DDO: Three barrels full of kobolds

Bio Break

With the Necropolis series (mostly) finished, I’ve turned my attention back to completing any incomplete lower level quests. Looking through my adventure compendium, the lowest that sits unanswered is The Stones Run Red, a level 5 jaunt in Three Barrel Cove. Why not?

I had a full kid audience for this one, so I enjoyed running commentary from my boys (“Ohh man, don’t step in the lava, dad! That’ll burn you up!”) and endured a three-year-old on my lap whose sole function was to jam on that spacebar as often as possible to make me jump. At least it was a very easy, very straight-forward run through a “fire mountain” to kill some ogres and desecrate a few dragon shrines. I think this is the first part of a series, so I’ll probably need to follow it up with the sequels. Even on elite, at level 14 I roflstomped…

More Geomorphic Dungeons – with Dice!

Dyson's Dodecahedron

TL;DR: Four new geomorphs in a flashback to a decade ago, and the DungeonMorph Dice Kickstarter is going strong and moving in on $10k of the $15k target!

It is always kind of exciting being involved in a Kickstarter as it goes live. And this one is a great reminder of when I first started working on maps for the blog. It is refreshing to go back to my classic geomorph concepts and start drawing new ones again.

Doubly so knowing that they will be translated onto dice as we move forward! Joe over at Inkwell Ideas is Kickstarting 3 new sets of DungeonMorph Dice and I’m developing designs so we’ll have a Dyson map on every die in the set.

The Independents: Snowhaven

Cannibal Halfling Gaming

“Snowhaven has hosted a theocracy, two civil wars, a magi uprising, been partially burned to the ground, and had one small bout of cannibalism, yet still, she shambles on.” As opening lines to a setting book go, you can do a lot worse. I came across Snowhaven on Kickstarter a while back. The authors described it as “snowpunk”, a new genre they were trying to make stick. The way that the authors described it, they wanted to take the steampunk elements of technology and apply it to a fantasy setting, but also keep the sense of “grim isolation” that winter brings. Rather than having your standard bright, optimistic theme of “gaslamp fantasy”, the people of Snowhaven dwell in a brutally harsh cold water port, filled with intrigue between the noble houses and the Illuminate Church. Technology has not been soaring by leaps and bounds because of a new age of…

All revved up and ready to ride – mounts as animal companions

Roll Knowledge

C: So, earlier today you said to me, ‘Gee, Calder, right now in D&D there are familiars and animal companions, and there’s also mounts, which are a specific type of animal companion. And oh boy, are mounts getting a rough deal.’ Do you want to expand on that a little bit?

A: Yes—and can I just say, I think you captured my voice perfectly.

C: Thank you.

A: So this is a two-parter. Firstly, mounts which you acquire as an animal associate, as it were, through being a Cavalier, or through selecting an animal you can ride as your Druid or Ranger companion, need to be significantly better than an ordinary horse.

C: Right.

A: Like, if you’ve sacrificed a whole level into a particular class in order to get a mount, it should be better than any old horse you buy.

C: Okay. And we should say, when you…

Sunday Video Round Up: April 21 – 28

Gamer Crash

It’s once again time to watch some trailers! With Sunday finally here, the Video Round Up is back and stocked with all sorts of new trailers and gameplay from the past 7 days around the games industry. Here’s a sneak peek at everything below.

With Mortal Kombat 11 now on store shelves, all eyes turn back to Bethesda and id Software who may now hold the last major AAA release before E3. Rage 2 is only a few weeks away and to get everybody up to speed, a new trailer attempts to break down what exactly Rage 2 is. I haven’t watched it yet myself, but I’d imagine Andrew W.K. isn’t in it.

Following in the footsteps of most current Ubisoft games, For Honor continues to pump out new content, well after it originally launched. This latest trailer shows off the next big character update which fits the hero theme…

Raids week 120

Micki's Delirium

Raids 120 occurred on April 20, 2019.

1. Old Baba’s Hut LE
Osi was playing Osiride and I more than once during the run forgot this. I asked Vonk to do the team split, and this is what was chosen: Left: Osiride, Vonkiprus, Terona, Gorefwar, Cimpletan, Madzombie. Right: Thazara (me), Zoom, Sesili, Nedlyne, Tetravortex, Palter. We were a bit slower on the totems than usually, but over all it was good. Tahlua usually grabs reds right, this week there was a bit of confusion until I picked a kiter/ tank. For outside area Osi kited red crows and tanked shamblers. Completion time: 31 minutes, 4 seconds. Loot: 125 hut runes, 24 threads of fate, Dusk, the Light Descends, The Invisible Cloak of Strahd, Suffering, the Half of Whole.
