Traditional Games and Why We Love Them

I’ve made plenty of hay over my opinions about D&D. D&D is not a bad game, but it’s such a limited expression of what a role-playing game can look like. The most common counter-argument I get to saying that a gamer should play games other than D&D is somewhere along the lines of “if that’s what they like, that’s what they should play”. This is usually followed by pointing out several more obscure games, which usually look absolutely nothing like D&D, and harping on about how that’s not the play experience they want. And this straw man argument is one of many reasons I’ve decided to sing the praises of the giant middle ground of the hobby, the traditional RPGs.

Now Arriving: Games of August 2019

I don’t know about you, but for a month without a ton of major releases, July flew by. We’re now creeping towards the typically very busy Fall/Holiday game release schedule, so I hope you’ve been saving up. September is already looking unreal for new games, but let’s save that for another day.

For now, let’s turn out attention to August, the month I like to call Summer’s Last Hurrah. This month, we’ve got a good mix of major names and some interesting smaller titles. While sports fans can finally get their Madden fix, there’s a few unique titles releasing this month that could be something special.

DDO: Dance like no one’s watching

Dungeons and Dragons Online has a lot of bizarre and situational spells, but perhaps the most amusing of all these is Otto’s Irresistable Dance. Like the name implies, it makes the subject stop what they’re doing and boogie down, complete with a disco ball and little notes flitting around. Even though a boss was doing this to me in the final moments of a very long dungeon, I didn’t mind. I’m that easily amused.

Anyway, more House J quests for me today as I began with the super-lengthy The Enemy Within. On one hand, it was a tedious slog through an unmemorable crypt that took around 40 minutes to complete. On the other hand, it was straight-forward and nothing I couldn’t handle, even with some dancing thrown in to the mix. Fighting some mind flayers at the end proved to be a bit of an interesting challenge, even.

Part of the reason I enjoy participating in Blaugust is that it forces me to think more. What you’ll generally see here are posts about my game time, what my thoughts are on games I’ve finished. I like writing these because their easy and because there the kind of posts I like to read the most from other blogs. The challenge with writing these kinds of posts every day for an event is that there are some days I just don’t play anything. For these occasions I find myself struggling to come up with something to write about. Last year I actually suprised myself with some of the ideas I came up with.

The Frogs’ Reliquary

Even bullywugs have saints, holy frogs, and sanctified leaders and allies. They aren’t common, and they are revered. This bullywug reliquary dates back to the rule of the Verdant Administrant and The Empire of Gold.

The reliquary itself is collapsing into a much deeper dungeon. It can be entered from the jungle entrance in an old bullywug temple, or by climbing up out of the deeper levels below. But getting into the reliquary proper to acquire the holy relics within requires collecting the Agate, Jade, and Lapis keys that are sealed into tombs around the space.

Raids week 133

Raids 133 happened Wednesday July 24 and Saturday July 27. Here is the recap.

Wednesday

1. Killing Time LH
I decided I was going to try using discord voice chat for the raids, and fiddling with that kind of stole a big part of my concentration for the raids. Still, most of the party joined the voice chat, and I was only using discord voice for at least the first two raids. If you haven’t joined yet, Orien Raiding discord is the place to be (https://discord.gg/PKDxEtg). For KT, Osi was tanking, Arrowhavoc shadow kiter and Titus Nyt tank. I forgot who kited dogs. We had some deaths, probably because I was distracted and didn’t heal ppl, lol. Completion time: 25 min, 51 s. Loot: 84 time runes, 24 threads of fate, I think no named items.
