Isle of Dread – is it worth buying?

Micki's Delirium

I was asked the other day how the value of Isle of Dread compares to the other expansions, and I realised I couldn’t give a direct answer. So to do this I’m going to do a comparison between all the expansions, ignoring Saltmarch as it’s not a “real” expansion. I will also not include the extras like cosmetics and tomes in this comparison, I will only focus on content. Let’s do the expansions in chronological order.

The expansions are:
Menace of the Underdark
Shadowfell Conspiracy
Mists of Ravenloft
Masterminds of Sharn
Fables of the Feywild
The Isle of Dread

Click on the pages below to go to the separate pages. I did one per expansion and page 8 is the conclusion.

Menace of the Underdark (MotU)

11 quests
1 raid
4 wildernesses
1 public area

The quest Beyond the rift was also released with Menace of the Underdark, but…

DDO: Heading into the Fables of the Feywild

Bio Break

It’s been a good long while — nearly two years — since I played Dungeons and Dragons Online. Honestly, that shocked me. I thought it had only been a year, but nope, it’s been since August 2019. The only time I’ve been logging in since then is once a week to grab my golden dice throw. As a result, I’ve accumulated a whole lot of stuff — and two levels’ worth of XP boosts.

So I figured a return of sorts might be in the cards, at least to go through the most recent expansion, Fury of the Feywild. My initial momentum to do this was arrested when I had to spend a good hour or so getting my inventory sorted and my character leveled up.

The expansion starts with this mysterious and colorful house that’s plopped right into the middle of the harbor. It’s very much out of…

Red fens adventure #DDO

GamingSF

We’ve continued our party-of-three adventures in Dungeons & Dragons Online this weekend with two sessions running the instances accessible from the Red Fens wilderness adventure area. This swampy area has a lot of details to it apart from the dungeons it gives access to, but with limited time for play we chose to focus mainly on the quests given by the friendly Drow in the area – a series of four different instanced dungeons.

Quest givers ahoy!

Swamp zones can be rather one-note in character, flora and fauna. If you’ve fought a dozen crocodiles and giant spiders already you can get bored pretty quickly. Although Red Fens certainly has its share of giant spiders (ick!), it has some pretty fantastical opponents too, true to the games Dungeons & Dragons roots.

Some of them are actually quite vicious as well, the will-o’-wisps in particular with their lighting bolt attacks can…

Guest Post: DDO Masterminds of Sharn review (part 1)

Bio Break

Today’s guest post is from DDOCentral’s Matt, who wanted to give Bio Break’s readership a deeper look into Dungeons and Dragons Online’s Masterminds of Sharn expansion. Thanks Matt!

Dungeons and Dragons Online (DDO) released its fourth paid expansion on May 14th, 2019 titled Masterminds of Sharn. The three previous paid expansions for DDO are Menace of the Underdark, released on June 25th, 2012, Shadowfell Conspiracy, released on August 19th, 2013, and Mists of Ravenloft, released on December 6th, 2017.

Masterminds of Sharn is the first paid expansion for DDO set in the Eberron universe, which was the original DDO campaign setting when the MMORPG launched in early 2006. After thirteen years, DDO finally leaves the small frontier settlement of Stormreach on the southern jungle continent of Xen’drik where the adventure began for the great metropolis of Sharn, the City of Towers, located on the…

Cogs In Cogs

Return to House of Grouse

Well Gentle Giant may not be everyone’s cup of tea but hey I sort of like them and as I am discussing the Sharn Wilderness it is sort of appropriate. Now everyone knows I love wildernesses more than most dungeons. Certainly the sprawls of Barovia have become a fast favourite and so much so that I finish the slayer before finishing the saga.

So first thing about the Cogs is it is  big. But feels even bigger as there is a lot variation in height. From down under the cascade of molten melt to what I assume is an acid bath/shower. This is certainly a wilderness which pays not to get wet. Most people will avoid the molten bits (except certain hirelings who will stand and burn) but there is a lot more in the wild to be careful of.

Stairs and ramps all over the place makes it difficult…

SPOILER Sharn The Cogs

Micki's Delirium

The Cogs is a wilderness located in Sharn. All the quests here are full walkups with no quest giver. Most of the quests are also quick, one of them is a bit longer and one can be long if you decide to do it that way. There are 8 quests in the cogs and they can be completed in any order. Here are my screenshots, adding the sharn loading screen to hide the spoilers.

Masterminds of Sharn coming to DDO

GamingSF

I read over at Massively a little more about the upcoming expansion for Dungeons & Dragons Online, called “Masterminds of Sharn”. Details are still scarce as of yet, but at least we know that is the title of Update 43. I’m super excited to see what Standing Stone Games does with the city of towers, it is the biggest city in the Eberron setting and is a wonderful backdrop for potential adventures with a more urban/noir atmosphere than the jungles of Xen’drik where most of the game’s earlier content was set.

I would hope that the magically enhanced verticality of the city is featured; the city is dominated by impossibly tall towers that are surrounded and connected by a network of raised plazas and roads. There are several distinct tiers to the city offering a variety of radically different environments even within the one city.

DDO: Mists of Ravenloft completed!

Bio Break

Due to our regular DDO playgroup taking up most of my attention in that MMO, it’s been a very long time since I played my solo Artificer, who I last stranded somewhere toward the end of Ravenloft. However, I’ve been meaning to check back in with her, and since I’m twiddling my thumbs waiting for LOTRO’s progression server to unlock, I figured this was as good a time as any to get another mission in!

I picked up on the druid chain I had last left, although getting to the instance in question required a long trip through the wilderness. It was not pretty, as I kept getting ganked by all of the mobs, especially these flameskulls that would whittle me down from 200 to zero hit points in seconds. I tried to rez and run, but they dogged my every step. Even Mr. Devil up there wanted to get…
